Your new home - cost of energy = affordability
NetPLUS Concepts believes that an integrated, systemic approach, one which takes into account all of the disparate contributing factors, is the only viable path to a solution. If this solution is to be effective and permanent we need to look realistically at the underlying causes of our energy problems and how they are interwoven with societal dynamics; we must also understand how energy costs and consumption habits contribute to growing problems like urban blight, unemployment, pollution and crime.

The Status Quo -

To date, the focus in the US has primarily been on promoting conservation measures and increasing the energy efficiency of various residential, commercial and industrial energy consuming systems. Some of these efforts have been encouraged by government subsidy programs, and some have been in the form of regulatory imperatives such as the CAFE standards and gas-guzzler taxes.

These programs are assuredly making a difference, but serious questions remain as to the cost-benefit ratio and overall degree to which such measures have produced  meaningful results. In the greater analysis, we have not achieved the large scale reductions in energy consumption that we need to make to effect real change.

State of the Art -

Home owners typically have few options available by which their existing houses can be modified to reduce or stabilize their purchased energy budgets.

Many of us have already installed flow-restricting shower heads and faucet in our homes, increased insulation to attics, ceilings, walls, water heaters, foundations, pipes and ductwork, upgraded windows and doors with additional glazing or have replaced them outright, and have replaced inefficient older furnaces, water heaters and other major appliances with energy-efficient units. The problem is that while implementing measures like these can make a significant dent in our energy expenditures, there is a point of diminishing returns and our cost of energy will never be eliminated altogether.

What is the NetPLUS Concept?

We define a NetPLUS building as having all of the following characteristics:

1. Utilizing solar thermal technology, the structure will produce 100% of its own energy needs, and optionally a generous surplus for resale.

2. Construction materials must be “environmentally friendly” and not pose any potential health risks to occupants.

3. The structure must be affordable, durable and attractive, and require minimal routine maintenance.

4. The occupant's quality of life must not be sacrificed nor should extensive lifestyle changes be required.
